In order to properly use feminized pollen, you must first know that the plants are divided into monoecious, in which both females and males appear on one plant flowers, and dioecious, which in turn produces either female flowers on one plant, or male.

In dioecious plants, this property can be artificially (or naturally - by environmental stress) altered, thus inducing so-called hermaphroditism (bisexuality).

Female plants that are altered in this way (eg artificially, by the action of colloidal silver) will also begin to produce male pollen sacs.

However, these male pollen sacs contain a female X chromosome, so when the pollen from them gets, or is applied to, another female plant, only 2x X chromosome enters the seed in this way. The resulting seed is thus feminized.

This brings us to feminized pollen, which is this year's hot news on the market.

It is launched by Holy Seeds Bank, based in Spain, which exhibited at Cannafest this year. Her representatives smiled with a smile about everything we wanted to know.

When and how was your company founded?

Our company was established relatively recently, it was founded in 2017 by a group of friends who have been growing cannabis for more than 15 years.

Can you tell us something about your philosophy?

Our philosophy is also our motto: "What we do in life will leave its reflection in eternity." For the HSB team, however, it is not just about philosophy, but also about the way of life, work and research. It has to do with the passion with which we are constantly looking to the future, with which we are looking for things that we can change in our beloved and fascinating industry.

How do you make pollen, what is the magic behind it?

It's not about magic, it's about hard work.
Feminized pollen is obtained from plants selected by us and our colleagues, some of whom are elite clones. Pollen collection from them is done manually and very carefully.

How is pollen used?

Using pollen is easy. You apply it to the flower with a brush or knock it out of our special container, which is actually such a small salt shaker.
Every grower who wants to preserve the properties of a certain plant now has the opportunity to pollinate it in a controlled environment. The obtained seeds in their gene carry the desired properties from the mother plant. Feminized pollen can also be used by anyone who wants to create new hybrids from their favorite plant.

How long will the pollen last and how to store it?

Pollen can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 6 months or in the freezer for up to 18 months. However, it is advisable to use it within 6 months of collection. The main enemy of pollen is wet or increased humidity.

What if I buy pollen a week before pollination and it doesn't work?

Before launching the product on the market, we performed a number of tests in extreme conditions, in different storage conditions and with different methods of handling, which gives us the certainty that the quality of the product is first-class. The feedback so far is very good, which we are happy about. But it also means a responsibility for maintaining quality for us. We ask our clients to report any problems that arise. We will give them all the support.

How often do you collect pollen from plants?

The quality of our product is guaranteed by continuous collection. The HSB team collects pollen every month and pollen older than 6 months is withdrawn from the market.

When is the best time to pollinate plants?

The best time for pollination is between the 23rd and 32nd day of the 12/12 regime, depending on the variety used for pollination. Remember that seed development takes 3 to 5 weeks to full maturity.

What will be the quality of the resulting seeds, what can I expect?

Due to stress, a very small percentage of hermaphrodites is normal. This property is actually the basis for the formation of feminized seeds. The quality of the seeds will be standard and they will be feminized. Everyone can produce seeds. We help the average grower, we select and stabilize the plant and we offer a product ready for use. The most difficult part of this process is the selection, which can take years. But we did the work for growers.
